Authorities said a gunman opened fire at a crowded mall north of Dallas yesterday, killing at least eight people and wounding seven others before he was shot dead. The shooting was the second deadliest in the United States this year.

Authorities did not identify the gunman but said he acted alone.

There have been 199 shootings involving at least four people this year in the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a database. There has been a particularly deadly wave of large-scale shootings in recent days. This past weekend outside of Houston, a gunman shot and killed five people after neighbors told him to stop shooting in his yard.

Texas has some of the most lenient gun laws in the country, and is proud to be a state with over a million gun owners despite its recent history of mass shootings. Several authorities in Texas say they have seen an increase in sudden shootings since September 2021, when the state began allowing most adults to carry a gun without a license.

Yesterday’s shooting was the deadliest in Texas since the massacre of 19 students and teachers at an Uvalde elementary school in May 2022. The shooting began around 3:30 p.m. at Allen Premium Outlets, an outdoor mall with more than 120 stores 25 miles north of Dallas. Allen, a suburb of Dallas, has a population of about 100,000, and the shopping center is one of the largest in the area.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the gunman got out of a car, then began shooting at people on the sidewalk, according to a video circulating online. Dozens of shots rang out as he approached the shoppers. Videos on social media also showed people scrambling for shelter or running through a parking lot with loud noises.

Allen’s police chief said a police officer at the mall rushed to the sound of gunfire and killed the gunman.

Witnesses described a familiar scene of pandemonium. Geoffrey Keaton was having lunch when he heard the gunshots. “I knew right away,” he told the Times. “I put my little girl under the table to protect her, and then her voice rose, as if there was.”

Not much is known about the victims; The authorities have not yet identified them. Seven people died in the mall, and two more died later in hospitals. A spokesman for the hospital said that the number of injured ranges between 5 and 61. It is reported that three people are in critical condition and four are in stable condition.

The authorities did not specify the gunman’s motive.
