In an interview with HT Lifestyle, interior designer Poonam Kalra, Creative Director of I Center for Applied Arts, shared, “Much like travel, architecture and design take us beyond the physical world – it interacts with emotions by engaging the senses, transcending time and space. The flow of spaces is Willing to take a thematic turn to bring people closer to their travel experiences – whether it’s a memory of the past or a dream of the future. Such travel-inspired themes speak to the homeless out there with an exuberant presentation of travel scenes that evoke the atmosphere of a certain place somewhere.” I suggested:
- Infusing inspiration into compositions
An experience predicted by a narrative composition. It can be thought of, with straightforward elements such as the internal setting of a particular destination. A hotel stay from the past can be reminiscent of the hotel’s home environment with a lavish indoor pool featuring a sauna and other relaxation points on par with the luxury hotel spa. On the other hand, it can be seen that outdoor spaces packed with resort-like amenities evoke the feeling of a sanctuary at home – an outdoor spa and fire pit area, along with oversized handcrafted hammocks come together to create a scenic destination within the walls of one’s backyard.

Far down memory lane, international experiences such as a trip to the Italian countryside can be cited through farm-to-table experiences with a cozy al fresco dining setting, with a majestic dining pavilion and an elegant greenhouse conservatory – these subtle details create a seamless flow of microfarm in the Backyard somewhere in Italy, to an outdoor dining room table in an urban city. Conversely, New York City-inspired urban design can have a very industrial feel to it—exposed brick texture, metal accents, Edison light bulbs, modern artwork, and a variety of decor pieces new and vintage. This theme can be pulled together into a monochromatic theme – a straight black and white base with hints of a pop of color like scarlet red or yellow.
Tuscan interior design is a beautiful and sophisticated style. We’re not referring to your mother’s “Tuscan-inspired” kitchen from the early 2000s when referring to this design. No, the real Tuscan-inspired design is much simpler and more refined. Tuscan designs often feature warm colors, large tile floors, dark wood and stucco, and exposed beams.
- Spell excitement in mood boards

Moodboards paint a picture of travel experiences. Creating exciting color combinations—whether inspired by adventures or simply complementing them—can cause the different elements of a space to come together under a common theme. For example, the feel of a seaside getaway can be recreated with a beach-inspired palette with shimmering blues, sophisticated beiges, pale pinks and light yellows. Since the goal of a coastal getaway is to make you feel transported to the beach, beach-inspired homes can take on the light, airy, and effortless vibe of the theme, with coastal colors and hints of light-colored distressed wood to set the tone. As for decor, instead of going with the same old souvenir display with oversized seashell decorations and anchor prints, the space can make room for wall art depicting peaceful beach scenes or other nautical themes.

The other side of travel memories brings earthy color palettes, with moss green, brown cedar, light gray and terracotta recreating the charm of the forest and mountains. The interior designed as a mountain cabin design can directly fit natural materials such as wood and stone. The color scheme can usually be neutral, with an emphasis on cool colors like grays and creams to accentuate the feeling of a hillside retreat. Here, decor items can include matte black hardware, leather furniture, and traces of items found in nature, such as antlers or rough wood.
An escape to the tropics is equally exciting. Transforming a space into a tropical getaway can be as fun as a Hawaiian vacation—the space can go all green, with a splash of refreshing hues like apricot orange, deep sea blue, and sunny yellow inspired by tropical lands. The décor can be accentuated with handmade pieces made from natural materials such as cane, rattan, jute, and bamboo.

When in doubt, a good neutral color palette can always look purposeful and sophisticated. Neutral spaces can be elevated in style with custom accessories like printed tapestries, embroidered throws, dummy chests, dated consoles, memo art and souvenirs that bring to life glimpses of travel experiences with a generous mix of patterns and memories alike.
- Adding character with layers
Connecting to travel through the design vehicle can recreate an exciting experience, no matter the scale—even the smallest gesture, like smelling a candle or weaving a basket can kindle emotions from the experiences. These layers of décor help bring back bits of culture from the places traveled—authentic pieces, handicrafts, and more can reflect an era, culture, or place. More modern influences are also gaining popularity such as collectibles, street art, or custom pieces from local artists, which can hang on walls or fit into a travel collection in custom built niches. Likewise, for mementos that hold a very personal connection, there can be storage boxes inside, which allow people to create a series of their experiences and save the details of them.

The concept of travel is a collection concept, like memories and diaries. It can be highlighted by rich layers of materials such as patterned metals, inlaid stones, patterned ceramics, patterned textiles and more adding character to a neutral space. Accentuate the furnishings with matching throw pillows made from indigenous textiles or various wall panels painted with tribal art. These decor pieces give cues to start a conversation while giving people the opportunity to tell the story behind that particular piece of art.
- Exudes old world charm
Sometimes a particular memento may influence a design element, color scheme, or desire to feature it within a home—they are often items from the past that have a special meaning to them. Including vintage details like pre-loved pieces and a custom collection of textiles, pottery, art, or books can create a nostalgic feel that can drive the idea of a space with vintage style. Outdated items can also be brought back to life such as trim from a metal portal used as a wall hanging, a wood panel from a carved door repurposed as a coffee table or an antique cabinet made into a powder room nightstand. This house can be the place where vintage pieces are reborn in the same old sense, but in a new form.

In the bigger picture, some parts of the house could look like they came out of a ’90s movie—with a coffered ceiling, carved beams, columned hallways, and paneled walls that give a hint of the old-fashioned way of living. Solid wood, genuine leather, and other materials sourced from the original during travel experiences can also add to the mood board of a space and bring a bygone era to life.
Tangible Traditions offers a unique way to live the old world charm. A travel destination, no matter where it is – regional or global, can give way to indigenous businesses, which will one day find their way into your home. A house or part of it can speak of wandering with those items that come with an ethnic feature such as carpets from Turkey, earthenware from China, tiles from Portugal, among other traditional decor that can be traced back to a particular place. Creating these combinations in an essentially neutral environment gives enough space for the individuality of the pieces to stand out, without giving away the old world charm they share.

Ankit Ojha and Anand Ojha, Principal Designers at Anand Atelier Associate said, “The most wonderful thing about travel is that it allows you to explore the unexplored, it shows you the endless possibilities that the world holds for us. Travel gives us a different perspective towards our lives. Not everyone can travel.” Anywhere he wants but you can definitely get inspired interiors anywhere he wants.”
Encouraged to design your space in a way that inspires and motivates you and allows your spirits to be free and happy, they recommended the following:
There must be places that you have visited and loved. Inspire your angles from those places.
Suppose we want to have a Goa vibe in our corner, we will immediately think of bright colors with visible wooden furniture. The floors will be anodized or printed tiles and to add to that we can have a few plant pots next to it and with your favorite book collection will certainly secure the ambiance.
In the same way we can take inspiration for our angles from any place of our choice just by selecting a few boobs and boobies from that place.
Design your spaces with a theme. It can be a cool theme for the space or it can be a warm theme with an earthy color palette. Deciding on the theme will make it easier to get the vibe of that place we’re looking for inspiration from. Let’s say our theme is traditional, contemporary, minimalist or extreme, defining these themes will guide us towards choosing pieces including furniture and artwork.
Mixing colors and prints is the easiest way to bring light and airiness to your interior spaces. Mixing patterns, floral pillows, and a range of pastel colors in your living rooms will give the space a bright and fresh look. We can have our own colors and prints depending on our theme.
We can choose among bright colors such as orange, sunny yellow, soothing green and calm blue. For ingenuity, we can choose from neutral tones, grays, and earthy shades that will bring a relaxing atmosphere to your space.
When traveling to a different place, a detail is something that cannot go unnoticed. A few places have sharp furniture, all in straight lines and elegant designs, a few places have massive furniture while others have intricate carving details on it. Furniture details made by artisans and craftsmen are inspired by their places. Bringing in these details will bring with it the character of the whole place.
